This latest close-up of the lunar surface from the U.S. orbiter LRO has a resolution of 60 cm/px. The cut-up of the pr image is just a foretaste. The full image, and the high-resolution icon picture of Jack Schmitt at Apollo 17's Station 6 (during the last Moon walk) are all breath-taking.

Next Stop, the Moon on NPR

The audio will be posted late Friday afternoon. Dr. Paul Spudis has been custodian to America's halcyon lunar dreams for nearly as long as Jack Schmitt, the only scientist to ever visit there. When Paul pulls together the news threads on lunar and planetary science and puts them in context, they stay there.

The moon has been getting a lot of traffic recently. Missions from the U.S., India, and Japan have all flown by, or into, our lunar neighbor. Planetary scientist Paul Spudis explains how the data collected may help make the moon a pit stop for future planetary missions.
